Paul Palazzo Sr. Obituary

Paul R. Palazzo Sr. of Sharpsville, PA passed away peacefully 6:09 pm on Friday April 19th, 2013 in Sharon Regional Health System Sharon, PA. He was 92.

Mr. Palazzo was born on December 21st, 1920 in Sharpsville, PA the son of Victor and Josephine (Tortorette) Palazzo. He graduated from Sharpsville High School class of 1939.

Paul was a World War II veteran. He spent several months in England training prior to the Normandy Invasion, where he landed on Utah Beach. Paul was with the 896th Heavy Armor Company and was a .50 caliber machine gunner with the rank of corporal.

Paul’s company was among the first troops to enter the underground V-2 rocket factory in Nordhausen, Germany which held dozens of large manufacturing rooms and some unfinished rockets still on the production line. He helped in the liberation of hundreds of underfed slave workers.

He was awarded the Gold Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern, Campaign medals, with 5 Bronze Stars, and World War II Victory Medal.

Paul was employed as a Package Designer and group leader at the former Westinghouse plant for 41 years. He was a lifetime member of St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church Sharpsville, PA. Paul was a charter member of VFW post 6404 in Sharpsville, PA and the American Legion Post 162 also in Sharpsville. Paul loved hunting and gardening. He always grew Fig trees in his yard and would have fresh Figs in September.

Paul is survived by his wife Tommasina (Petrillo) Palazzo of 64 years who he married May 1st, 1948 at the Church of Sacred Heart in Sharon, PA.

He is survived by 3 sons, Victor (Vickie) Palazzo of Hermitage, PA; Michael J. Palazzo of Sharpsville, PA; Paul Palazzo Jr. of Sharon, PA; daughter Patrice Elaine Palazzo of Sharpsville, PA. Paul is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters, Elizabeth (Joseph) Mascolino; Nina (James) Raspanti; Veronica (Tony) Arcori; Rose (Robert) Baker; Delila (Charles) Joseph; 1 brother Carl (Mary) Palazzo.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday April 27th, 2013 at 11:00 am in St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church with Father Marc Stockton, officiating.

Full military honors will be held following mass at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church Sharpsville, PA.
