Joseph James “Jim” Smartz, 82, of Sharpsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 9th, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
Jim was born on August 18th, 1935 to Joseph and Mary (Karas) Smartz in Sharpsville, PA. He graduated from Sharpsville High School class of 1953 and played football and baseball for both the Sharpsville Blue Devils and the Allegheny Gators. Jim earned his bachelors degree from Allegheny College in 1957. On September 6th, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy (Gilchrist) Smartz with whom he shared over 59 years of marriage. Jim retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from The United States Marine Corps after serving 23 ½ years and served 2 tours of duty in the Vietnam War. Jim then worked for 18 years as The Director of Veteran Affairs of Mercer County.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew Church, a lifetime member of the Sharpsville VFW post 6404, Sharpsville American Legion, and Sharpsville Service Club. Jim was an avid Steeler fan who loved watching his granddaughters play softball and volleyball.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife Nancy Smartz, daughters, Rhoda (Sean) Carmody of Pittsburgh, Jamie Butler of Parker, CO, son, Jay (Brooke) Smartz of Parker, CO, 6 grandchildren, Caitlin Carmody, Erin Carmody, Allena Carmody, Zoë Butler, Lola Butler, Annabel Smartz, and sister Martha (Richard) Zenuch.
He was preceded in death by father, Joseph Smartz and mother, Mary Smartz.
Friends may call Tuesday, June 12th, 2018, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 124 Main St. Sharpsville, PA.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018, 11:00 am in the Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home, Sharpsville, PA, with Father Matthew Strickenberger, officiating.
Burial will take place in Westside Cemetery.
