Gerald Saul Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Eugene Saul, 93, formerly of Sharon, was reunited with his beloved wife of 70 years, Norma, on August 1, 2025. Born to Hugh Oliver Saul and Mary (Burns) Saul, "Jerry" entered the world on August 30, 1931 at his family home on Griswold Street. It was there that he enjoyed a happy childhood, often joining his father who was a street car operator at work. He attended Wengler Elementary, followed by Sharon High School, where he was a member of the Class of 1949.

Following graduation, he took a job as a salesperson at Shontz and Meyer Clothing store in downtown Sharon. It was there where one day a young woman went in to buy underwear for her Dad, spotted a handsome young man, and quickly left embarrassed. Not long after, fate took over, and they met for their first date on the Lake Julia Bridge in Buhl Park. Following a proposal on one of their long walks, they were married on September 5, 1953.

Soon after they welcomed four children: Jay, Donna, Debbie, and Betty, who were raised in a home filled with faith, love, and joy. Those years were filled with dining room basketball games, where there was actually a hoop, visits to the Dinner Bell, and trips every summer to Michigan. The house they made their home on Sherman Avenue was a place where their children and grandchildren would remember as the house that built them. It's where they could find Jerry snoozing in his chair, sitting in the same spot every night at the supper table, faithfully watering his beloved grass, and enjoying his porch swing. The home simply was his favorite place, with his favorite people, located in his favorite place on Earth, Sharon.

It was that love of his city that inspired him to become a police officer. The early years were not easy. At one point, he worked full time "walking the beat" while working two other jobs to support his family. However, he remained devoted to what was truly his calling. During his tenure with the force, he was promoted to captain, and proudly served as the chief of police. He also served for many years as the President of the Fraternal Order of Police, and as the President of the Mercer County Republican Party.

Jerry spent his retirement taking his beloved road trips throughout the country with his wife, his son, and his brother Donald, who was his very best friend. Together they researched and published the complete lineage of their family's genealogy dating back to the 1500s. He also loved spending time with his family who revered and adored him for the man he was: a role model filled with integrity and wisdom. Some of his best advice included "You're no better than anyone else, but no one is better than you," as well as "Nothing good happens after 10 o'clock in the evening."

Most of all, Jerry or "Mr. Saul" as he was called, enjoyed nothing more than Sharon High School football. Every year during the summer months, he would drive by the high school stadium and say, "It won't be long now." He did not miss a game, driving around the state following the team with his son and grandkids. When it became too difficult to see, he would wear headphones and listen to the game on the radio, keeping those around him abreast of all of the other high school teams' scores.

Go Tigers!

Jerry is survived by a son, Jay Saul of Warren, Ohio; three daughters, Donna Miller of Sharpsville, PA; Debbie Trinckes of Brookfield, OH; and Betty Skibo, as well as her husband Rich, both of Sharpsville, PA.
