Dear Nancy, Jay, Rhoda, and Jaime:
We just returned from Atlanta to attend my brother's and his wife's 90th
birthday celebration to hear Nancy Skosh"s message about Joe's death. Our prayers of comfort are with your family as I write this condolence. We had many good years of friendship in and after the Corps." Old Joe Smartz used to own a grocery store, old Joe Smartz ..............." Well you all know that ditty.:)). Many, many good times. The "colonel sends" were welcome messages over the years. Joe was a superb Officer of Marines who served the Corps and country with honor on active duty and as the VA Rep there in your county. Logistics was his game and he excelled at it on the FMFLANT staff. We first met on Okinawa in 1958 and then had a great tour in Hawaii in 1962-1965 before going off to RVN; kept in contact over the years. We shall miss him and pray God's comfort and blessings on all of the family. Semper Fi, Dave and Nancy

Jim was a good friend, good neighbor and great co-worker when we were in Mercer County government. We named him "Coach" for our county employee softball team and he took control best he could of our gang of no-talent misfits. His Marine training and Catholic faith somewhat prepared him for our games, which we usually lost. But we always had fun thanks to Coach.

Rest in peace, Coach.

Dear Aunt Nancy, Rhoda, Jay and Jaime

I’m so sorry to hear about Uncle Joe. He meant so much to me growing up and being able to see him and Aunt Nancy at the annual Bullard Pig Pickins was always a highlight of the year. We were so lucky growing up with all of our Marine Corps aunts and uncles and kids. I speak for Mom, Mike and David in expressing our heartfelt condolences to you all. He was one of a kind and will be missed. Our love and prayers for peace are with you all.

Love, Jody
